Launch Overview
The Ghana Amateur Boxing League launched at Trust Sports Emporium (TSEL) in Accra marks a major moment in Ghana’s boxing history. On Friday, 21st February 2025, the event drew key sports leaders and media. The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kofi Adams, urged gyms and fans to embrace discipline and avoid violence. He stressed that this approach would help the league succeed.
A Collaborative Effort
Trust Sports Emporium (TSEL), the operator of the Bukom Boxing Arena, and the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF). have teamed up to run this league. The league will occur every two weeks, starting 14th March 2025. Under the theme “Unleashing Boxing Stars,” the league will feature 36 top boxers from across the country. It will also help find and develop new talent for both national and global competitions, including the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland and the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.
TSEL’s Commitment
Madam Shirley Acquah-Harrison, Managing Director at TSEL, emphasized TSEL’s strong commitment to boxing. “Our aim is to identify and groom young boxing talents and give them a platform to shine on both national and international stages,” she said. TSEL will invest in the league to help grow boxing in Ghana.
A Call for Discipline
Mr. Adams also spoke about the noble nature of boxing. He encouraged athletes to follow the sport’s rules and use proper channels for disputes instead of turning to violence. “Boxing is a disciplined and noble game. We must play by the rules to make this league a success,” he stated.
Support from Key Figures
Key figures at the event included the President of the Ghana Boxing Federation, Mr. Bernard Quartey, who confirmed that boxers will receive essential support tokens, as well as specialized packages for coaches, ensuring that both athletes and their support teams are well-equipped for the challenges ahead. The launch was also graced by prominent guests such as the Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, Nii Alfred Kotey Ashie, the President of Ghana Olympics Committee and other notable sports administrators.
According to coverage by the Ghanaian Times, the league is poised to not only reinvigorate amateur boxing in Ghana but also contribute to the strengthening of the national boxing team, the Black Bombers.
